Lea Michele might be the poster child for flawless skin and an insanely healthy lifestyle (here are 20 times she inspired us to work out) but the actress recently shared that she's suffered from acne her whole life.

"I had to go on a lot of medication growing up," she wrote on her Instagram Stories yesterday after a follower asked her about her number-one trick to healthy skin. "[I went on] Accutane twice and many others to help my skin," she continued.

Eventually, however, Michele learned that she was suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which ended up being the root of all of her skin problems. "[It] is a common diagnosis for women," Michele continued. This is the first time Michele has spoken out about having PCOS.

ICYDK, PCOS is a medical condition affecting 9 to 18 percent of women worldwide. It's known for causing menstrual problems (usually irregular periods) and an excess of certain hormones in the body causing skin problems (like acne) and abnormal hair growth (usually on the upper lip or chin, or near the belly button and inner thigh). Not only is it a common cause of infertility, but it also increases your risk for a slew of serious diseases, including diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and depression. Michele shared how finding an amazing skin expert and products by Is Clinical did wonders to transform her skin—but that major changes to her lifestyle are what helped her sustain results. "I strongly believe in taking care of yourself on the inside," she wrote. "Drinking tons of water, good sleep, washing your face before bed, no smoking etc., is always a good place to start."
