Princess Kate vs. Princess Diana's Maternity Style: How Do They Compare?
Much like Princess Diana, pregnant here with Prince William in 1982, Princess Kate, who welcomed Prince George in July 2013, kept covered and colorful during her first pregnancy, favoring ladylike, empire-waist dresses (including this Jenny Packham number) accessorized with tailored coats and cardigans. The women's silhouettes of choice, however, couldn't be more different.
One of Kate's first – and most glamorous – maternity looks was this V-neck, high-slit Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in London in December 2012. Diana chose a similarly glam dress – with glitter and more room to grow – while pregnant with Prince Harry in 1984.
One thing that's on the up since Diana's pregnancy with William? Hemlines! The princess's embellished blue coat could pass for a Snuggie (did they have those in the '80s?) compared to Kate's plaid Moloh coat dress, paired with her trademark black suede boots for an outing in Scotland.

Is it blue for boy? It certainly was when Diana chose her flowing frock for a 1982 polo match, opting to hide her bump rather than show it off, which Kate did in an A-line Emilia Wickstead creation.

A royal's formal look is never complete without a fascinator, and Diana kept her head chicly covered while making an appearance in 1982. Kate's Angela Kelly style, worn for a London outing with the Queen was actually quite similar to her mother-in-law's haute headpiece.

Diana's favorite silhouette – flowing, with that signature tie neckline – looks as appropriate in the '80s as Kate's sheath is every bit on-trend for 2013, paired with a Tara Jarmon coat and clutch for a charity visit.

Both women look happy to show some leg in their red coats, the Duchess in a knee-length number for a Scotland trip, Diana in a patterned piece – plus coordinating topper and shoes – while pregnant with William in 1981.
