Cooking and cleaning with baking soda can be a particularly messy task. Spilling that fine white powder every time you need to measure out a small amount is both frustrating and wasteful.

So, until somebody finally invents an alternative to the box-and-spout setup that’s been plaguing kitchens for generations, we’ll be using Apartment Therapy’s brilliant DIY hack for storing the unruly baking necessity.

As it turns out, the answer to your baking soda woes might be as simple as a good-old-fashioned salt shaker—emptied of salt, of course. A salt shaker is inexpensive (this classic glass model is only $5 on Amazon!) and reportedly gives a precise, clump-free pour every time. It’s also a space-saving alternative to that clumsy cardboard box or the equally troublesome spoon-and-jar solution. Just be sure to label it so guests don’t mistakenly pour baking soda on their eggs!

Game = changed.
