Feng Shui Tips to Turn Your Bedroom Into a Retreat
Feeling drained?
Your home's furnishings and layout can greatly affect your sleep and energy, says Jayme Barrett, author of Feng Shui Your Life. The bedroom should used be for sleep and sex only (and not for work or stressful situations), but that doesn't mean you can't add personal touches to make it more comfortable. Here, her suggestions for a more peaceful space.

Cut the clutter
"A messy area symbolizes unfinished business and keeps your mind in an anxious state," Barrett says. Keep books neatly stacked, and odds and ends out of sight in covered boxes or baskets. If you can't fall asleep because ideas keep popping into your head, keep a notebook (sometimes called a worry journal) by your bedside where you can jot down reminders, close the cover, and leave those thoughts alone until the next day.

Bring in nature
Studies show that just looking at nature can lower blood pressure. Flowers and plants signal new growth to your subconscious—and a positive outlook brings peace. Or get creative: Just as this chronic pain patient did, you may find relaxation in the form of a rock garden, mini fountain, or photographs of outdoor scenery.

Pamper your senses
A truly restorative bedroom makes all of your senses feel good. Try adding an incredibly plush rug or a chenille throw. Aromatherapy with a calming scent like lavender can help, too.

Pair up
"Items in twos create harmony in a room," Barrett says. That serenity can help you sleep better. Try matching tables, pictures, or lamps.

Make a strategic move
Move your bed against a solid wall and facing the door so no one can surprise you, and close your door at night to keep distractions such as noise and pets out. Also, choose bed linens you love; a circular design can be soothing.

Say so long to the plasma
Besides distracting you with late night shows, the boob tube may be interrupting your sleep even when it's turned off. Studies show that electromagnetic fields from televisions, computers, wireless devices, and even exercise machines can interfere with brain and nervous system signals, disrupting slumber.
