Don't smoke
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's a message worth repeating. In addition to causing cancer and other ills, smoking can raise the risk of developing psoriasis and aggravating existing psoriasis. "It puts stress and strain on the body and makes it more difficult for the body to reduce inflammation," says Dr. Green, who is also chair of the research committee at the National Psoriasis Foundation. One study found that people who smoked at least a pack a day had more than double the risk of severe psoriasis than those who smoked half a pack or less.
