At-home systems typically have a base station that communicates with trained staff at a monitoring center and a help button that connects to the base station. The base station is plugged into a centrally located outlet. With the help button, the senior can move around the house or yard and still be able to call for help by pressing the button. An on-the-go system uses a mobile device with a cellular connection, enabling the user to travel. Some systems also use a lightweight help button that communicates with the mobile device.
