A stroke is when blood supply to the brain is interrupted, usually when something blocks the blood vessel or a blood vessel bursts. In either case, the lack of blood flow means the brain isn't getting oxygen, and that lack of oxygen can lead to tissue death. Tissue death can begin within minutes, which is why quick treatment is crucial. Strokes can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death.
