Because looking good can make you feel better.
We've all been there—a cold strikes the day of a big meeting at work, or you come down with a virus before a special event. Although staying home is best when you're sick to avoid spreading germs and give yourself time to rest, sometimes a scheduling change simply isn't possible. For those days, use these makeup artist-approved tricks to fake yourself healthy.
Keep skin hydrated
Dry skin is dull skin, and when you're sick, you're usually dehydrated, which leaves your complexion looking the opposite of glowy. Professional makeup artist Nancy Siler recommends using a hydrating serum like Dermalogica Ultra Calming Serum Concentrate paired with a refreshing spray like Dermalogica Ultra Calming Mist, which is uplifting and keeps skin from drying out. Mist throughout the day to insure optimal hydration.
Go for a creamy concealer
Concealer works wonders on any given day, but when you're sick, it's especially magical. Avon's celebrity makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan suggests looking for a creamier formula because it will "help skin look fresher and more natural." She likes Avon Ideal Nude Cream Concealer. "Use it under the eyes to mask any sleepless nights," Deenihan says.
Another good one if your eyes are runny and you need something waterproof: It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Full Coverage Anti-Aging Waterproof Concealer ($24; sephora.com).
Lip balm will be your best friend
Add some color
"Often when you are sick, you lose some color in your face," says Deenihan. "So adding a cream blush to your cheeks will also give a natural healthy flush." We like Chantecaille Cheek Gelee Happy Hydrating Gel-Cream Blush—it' the perfect peachy pink and has the lasting power of a stain, so you don't have to worry about reapplying.
Define your eyes
Skip the heavy eye makeup—who has the energy when they're feeling crappy anyway? While you could go for your regular black or brow mascara, runny eyes might make a mess of that. Instead, try a clear mascara like Maybelline Great Lash to help lengthen and define lashes in the most natural looking way possible.
If you want to go a step further, a bit of white liner in your water line could help eyes to appear brighter. A good one: Essence Kajal Pencil ($2; amazon.com).
