His focus includes treating cancers in the abdomen, complex cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). HIPEC is the process of delivering high-dose heated chemotherapy in the operating room after surgical removal of visible disease. HIPEC is effective in different types of cancers. Before teaching at UC Irvine, Dr. Eng led one of the most robust peritoneal surface malignancy programs in the country as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Chicago. Dr. Eng has co-authored peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals including Cancer Discovery, Cancer, British Journal of Cancer, and JAMA Surgery. The research he completed on the molecular and immunologic characteristics of peritoneal tumors was funded by both extramural and intramural funding. The goal of his research was to develop innovative therapies for metastatic disease and optimize outcomes and care in cancer patients. Today, Dr. Eng serves on the editorial board for various scientific journals and national committees. Education He graduated from Brown University and completed his general surgery residency at Rutgers University.
