Calf Squeeze Test for Achilles Tendon Rupture

The calf squeeze test (also called the Thompson or the Simmond's test) can identify an Achilles tendon rupture. While you are kneeling on a chair with your legs hanging over the edge, or lying face down with your lower legs bent up 90 degrees, your doctor will squeeze your calves.

• If the Achilles tendon is still attached, your foot will flex downward.
• If the tendon is ruptured, your foot will not move.
• If there is a partial tear, the calf squeeze test may be normal.
