"There are plenty of good bedtime habits that can help ease you into sleep—such as letting go of whatever's bothering you that day. Writing down those thoughts in a notebook, or a worry journal, is a good way to get them out of your head for the night, says Carol Ash, DO, medical director of the Sleep for Life center in Hillsborough, N.J.

There are also bad habits that can keep you awake and can add even more stress to your night, such as clock-watching. In this video, Dr. Ash explains why the brain has trouble judging time in sleep, and why watching the clock can make your insomnia seem much worse than it is.
