When used properly and for the right amount of time, prescription medications can work wonders for patients who "just didn't get the sleep rules," says Carol Ash, DO, medical director of the Sleep for Life center in Hillsborough, N.J. But to ensure that the patient learns how to fall asleep naturally, they should be combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy sessions with a sleep specialist.
