People who suffer from chronic pain often, understandably, have habitual negative thoughts that accompany it. Those thought patterns can actually worsen pain. Through “cognitive restructuring,” pain specialists “teach people to examine their thoughts and come up with an alternative thought that’s more realistic,” says Beverly Thorn, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, who works with chronic pain patients. In this video, Thorn explains how she helps patients reframe how they think about pain to help them reduce their stress and hopefully lessen their pain.
