Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, occasionally happens in people with type 2 diabetes who take medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas. Drinking juice or eating a piece of candy quickly counteracts these scary episodes (you can feel jittery and lose consciousness). Blake takes insulin and usually carries Starburst candy in case of hypoglycemia. One day he had an episode of hypoglycemia at work and realized that he didn't have any candy. He had to run to the store—while his blood sugar was dropping rapidly. "I was really getting nervous," he says.
