Many people with type 2 diabetes want to try using diet and exercise to control their blood sugar, before resorting to medication. However, doctors often use medication right away to get blood sugar down to acceptable levels. If diet and exercise work, you may be able to reduce or stop medication later on, says William Bornstein, MD, an endocrinologist at Emory Clinic in Atlanta.
