Spinach artichoke dip is one of those comfort food staples we just can’t resist. Whether hanging out with friends at the bar, or settling in to watch a game at home, the cheesy spread is pretty much always irresistible. The kicker? A sizzling platter of the good stuff could cost you upwards of 1,500 calories at a restaurant. Yes, really.

But when frigid winter temps are on full blast, the need for a warming snack that satisfies is real. So, we went ahead and slimmed down the tried-and-true splurge. Our version of spinach artichoke dip gets a healthy makeover thanks to less fattening ingredients like light mayonnaise, fat-free cream cheese, and part-skim mozzarella.

We also add some protein to the mix too. A can of lima beans, for example, gives the spread a hit of nutrition along with a thicker texture. Pulses, like lima beans, are one of the healthiest foods around—and for good reason. They’re full of plant-based protein, complex carbs, iron, and magnesium. Plus, they are easy to cook up, affordable, and gluten-free.
