Everybody feels sad once in a while. Depression, on the other hand, is a complex condition characterized by profound sadness, lethargy, feelings of worthlessness, and a loss of interest in social activities. About 15 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with clinical depression each year.
Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day (as well as Depression Screening Day), a time when experts all over the world try to raise awareness about mental health issues.
Every year about 1 million people take their own lives, often leaving the people around them emotionally devastated and shocked because they didn't see it coming. All too often, people can miss the signs, or if they do suspect someone is contemplating suicide, they aren't sure what to do about it.
